“It started raining, and then it started hailing, and then all the clouds started to kind of swirl and come together, and as soon as the wind started to pick up, that’s when I headed for the basement, but we never saw it,” Mr Fienhold said. The Omaha Public Power District reported that nearly 10,000 customers were without power in the Omaha area. “People had warnings of this and that saved lives,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said, of the few serious injuries. Lt. Bonacci said only two people have been transported for treatment, both with minor injuries.

"If something makes sense, I like it." This philosophy, in fact, extends to all of Roth's work. For example, the website for her company, Built Custom Homes, says, "We pride ourselves in a unique approach to beach living and functional options for custom home design." If you're like us, you probably watch HGTV, wondering how your favorite network stars have the time for yet another show. Well, it turns out that new shows don't always require something to be developed completely from scratch. Bonacci said many homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

So I think anybody that's worked on their house has had that project where it didn't go right. I mean, I'm sure it's happened to you. Another big TV adventure is "Help! I Wrecked My House." The reality show follows Roth as she helps average homeowners who, to put it mildly, have totally wrecked their homes in DIY disasters. Considering more than 16 million people watched the show's first season, as per HGTV, it makes sense that it's back for Season 2! "Jasmine knows how to ease the anxiety homeowners feel when a home improvement project goes wrong," said Katie Ruttan-Daigle, vice president of programming and development at HGTV. "Her expertise and optimistic presence help every do-it-yourselfer get a much-needed win."

As previously mentioned, it's hard not to notice the unique, if not corny, title of Jasmine Roth's HGTV series "Help! I Wrecked My House." It turns out, she has her clients and fans to thank for it. "People kept coming to me and being like, 'Help! I wrecked my house!'" she shared with Showbiz CheatSheet. "Literally those exact words." So, after receiving a lot of these kinds of messages, Roth and HGTV just had to do something about it. This living room was a large space to work with, so I really wanted to optimize functionality. First, the fireplace needed a refreshed look—it was going to be the focal point of this living room with a beachy feel.

I don’t wish a herniated disc on anyone. It has been a challenge physically, mentally, and emotionally, especially because I have a toddler. So, not only is my job super physical and demanding but a three-year-old is no joke.

I was thinking about this the other day. I posted this on social media, but Drew Scott was in town, and he only lives up in LA and I live in Orange County, but still, it's far enough. I still feel like I just started yesterday. So you're going to be living and breathing that in and being around that all the time. So yeah, I always recommend that my clients, if possible, move out of their houses, hire the right people, and get it done so they can get back in. But if you're not in that position, paint is one of those things where you can stay in your house, you can make a huge impact, you can change things up, you can make a house feel really fresh, really clean, really new.

Fans and friends alike took to Roth’s comment section to celebrate the end of season four and send well-wishes to the HGTV star, who is luckily not in as much pain as she was one year ago when working on season four of “Help! Click here to shop the entire episode. Be sure to add to your calendars and tune in to HGTV next Wednesday at 9/8c for a new episode of HELP! Tune in next week - Saturday, September 10rd at 9pm ET/PT for Episode 3 of Help! Watch on HGTV when it airs live or stream it on discovery+.

That moment when they get to see their new house and they get to realize that their journey of home renovation, which for ... In this case, everybody ended in a failure, is over and that they can just pick up and live their life and not have to worry about bad electrical or plumbing or leaks or things that are going to catch on fire or construction dust around their kids. Yeah, I think watching this show is actually going to be really helpful because we do bring ...

"As far as this show goes," she told Showbiz CheatSheet, "you don't want to be on this show. If you're on this show, you did something wrong." So, Roth came to the rescue by completing the unfinished tub reno and adding a marble slab for a high-end look. She also added drawers on the side of the tub for toiletries (just another example of Roth's skill for incorporating function into design).

The storm churned up 78 potential tornadoes, mostly in Iowa and Nebraska, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said in its latest briefing report. As the new year 2024 kicks off, Roth also opened up her family’s Park City, Utah winter home for HGTV magazine, with full photos also available online. Kendall and Broderick chipped in before we began our renovation process by priming the bedroom. Kendall and Broderick’s relationship had to be put on the backburner these past few months, and now they had just six weeks to move from their rental to their renovated home. With a style that Kendall described as beachy and cottage-like and a style that Broderick simply described as functional, I was more than ready to give them their very own boho beach oasis to come home to.

Some injuries were reported but there were no immediate reports that anyone was killed. “When I started filming Season 4 of my show ‘HELP! I Wrecked My House’ on @hgtv it honestly felt like an overwhelming burden. While I was excited (so excited!), I was also recovering from a neck injury and the last time I checked, renovating 12 houses on camera might not be the ‘rest and relaxation’ the doctor ordered.

As much as we can, I would bring the family back to work on the houses. I think that's really important, right, to not just take your house and completely hand it over and be so hands-off that you don't have any ownership of your own project. I brought in as many people as I can to work on these houses and projects. One of the houses, we actually took the heirloom piano that the homeowner had for a long, long time, that she was sick of, and the kids came and helped me paint. We painted it bright yellow, so that was really fun.

So not only is the house done, right, the floors are installed and the walls are painted and everything's finished, as far as the construction goes, they're done in a sense of the decorating. It's not just staging, it's actually items that mean something to their family, and photos that ... I mean, I can talk about flooring all day.

The National Weather Service had not yet confirmed their strength. But the Omaha office said in a message on X that some of the damage its crews were encountering appeared consistent with EF3 twisters, with peak winds of 150 mph. “Nebraskans are no strangers to severe weather, and, as they have countless times before, Nebraskans will help Nebraskans to rebuild,” Pillen said.

So, it’s fun to have that time with someone who is doing something similar to me. They were hit by one setback after another. This house that they decided to take a chance on, was too much for them.

Tornadoes collapse buildings and level homes in Nebraska and Iowa

Hundreds of houses sustained damage in Omaha, mostly in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city, Omaha police lieutenant Neal Bonacci said. The existing bedroom walls were white with dark beige green colors, which really needed to be updated. I wanted to create a statement wall with a moody blue color with some texture to create visual interest. My contractor and I added a Roman Clay application using a thin coat of paint smeared onto the wall.

Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said crews had gone to the “hardest hit area” and had a plan to search anywhere someone could be trapped. Photos on social media showed heavily damaged homes and shredded trees. Video showed homes with roofs stripped of shingles, in a rural area near Omaha. Law enforcement were blocking off roads in the area. In January 2021 — after a successful first season which attracted over 16 million viewers — HGTV gave Roth the green light for a second season of "Help! I Wrecked My House." Season 2 premiered in September 2021 with hour-long episodes. Katie Ruttan-Daigle, HGTV vice president, programming and development, explained what contributes to the series' success. "Jasmine knows how to ease the anxiety homeowners feel when a home improvement project goes wrong," she said. "Her expertise and optimistic presence help every do-it-yourselfer get a much-needed win and fans love to see how renovation mistakes become masterpieces." OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday afternoon, damaging hundreds of homes and other structures as the twister tore for miles along farmland and into subdivisions.

They knew that their house was wrecked, and they had called, and they had reached out, and they had given me all their money to work with, but part of it is not just fixing their house. I wanted to make sure that after I left, they didn't come back in and start ripping into walls again and that kind of stuff. So there was one family that was really hard to work with, and I think that was probably my least favorite part of the show, just because in real life, it was a challenge, and it was one of those things where, professionally, it pushed me. I mean, in my show, homeowners paid for their own renovations, so literally, people have handed over their entire life savings, they handed over what is probably their biggest investment of their life, and they've given me all of their trust.

I grew up doing projects with my dad all the time, and so I think that's where a lot of my background and love of construction ... And just even having that mentality where you're like, "Well, I can do that," or like, "I can try that," or like, "Let's figure it out." Being resourceful, I think that's part of it, so yeah, I'm all for the kids. But again, anything that's dangerous, you keep them alive. I don't do bedrooms as often because usually people can figure out their bedroom, right? If you think about it, usually from a construction standpoint, it's floors and walls, and then the rest of it is decor. But there were a few bedrooms I did this season that people should look out for because they turned out awesome, so I'm really excited about that.

I’ve stayed pretty close with my Rock the Block opponents. Alison Victoria, Mina [Starsiak-Hawk], and Leanne [Ford]. Ben and Erin Napier, we have the same production company, so even before my show aired they have been huge champions of my show. I have to say the same thing about Drew and Jonathan Scott. I love being on their shows and seeing them. Ty Pennington cracks me up too all the time.

What will homeowners and hopeful DIYers learn? In an exclusive interview with The List, Roth answered all our "Help! I Wrecked My House" questions. “It started raining, and then it started hailing, and then all the clouds started to kind of swirl and come together, and as soon as the wind started to pick up, that’s when I headed for the basement, but we never saw it,” Fienhold said.

Around last Thanksgiving, I woke up and couldn’t move. I never felt pain like that in my life. Here, she details the season’s disasters and triumphs, overcoming a painful injury, and what she thinks of other HGTV stars. So there's a few things that I see all the time and I'm like, "Ooh, I wish ... Did you not listen to any of my things that I say?" So electrical and plumbing are the two things, for sure, 100%, hands down, every single time, you call a professional.

I got to do a lot of, yeah, a lot of bedrooms. I love doing the exterior of a house and landscaping. Of the eight homes we did this season, only one of them did we do the exterior of, but I love the way it turned out.

I do a lot of exteriors for my clients off TV as well. So, Roth and HGTV execs put their heads together and created "Help! I Wrecked My House" to help these homeowners who found they were in over their heads after starting home renovation projects they thought they could tackle — at first. "If I wasn't able to go in and help them, honestly, I don't know what they would do," Roth said in an interview with The List. "These are people that literally have watched HGTV. They've watched YouTube. They've watched whatever it is. They've read a book. They saw their dad do it. And they're like, 'I can do that.' And they ruin their houses."

“People had warnings of this and that saved lives," Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said, of the few serious injuries. Bonacci said only two people have been transported for treatment, both with minor injuries. The damage caused headaches for Nebraska football fans headed to the spring game in Lincoln, the capital.

We’ve also noticed aromatherapy devices, heated floors and towel warmers to name a few comfortable upgrades. Spiral staircases can take up less space at their base than traditional staircases, freeing up square footage, said L.A. A closet with tall ceilings can become two stories, or a top floor without enough room for a large staircase can open up to a rooftop terrace, said Durkovic. Home for about 50% more than he paid for it after adding a number of improvements, including a spiral staircase that unlocked access to a rooftop terrace, he said. For example, remodeling a half-bath is lowest on the cost spectrum, while remodeling a luxury or primary bathroom is highest. The specific aspects you choose to update will also play a large role in both the cost and the projected ROI of your remodel. From traditional looks to more stylistic choices, sinks can function as a bathroom’s focal point. The cost to install a sink averages between $300 to $4,000 for a standard bathroom.

The advantage of the high-pressure method lies in its ability to stabilize substances that do not exist under atmospheric pressure. Using the proposed method, larger alkali metal ions such as cesium could be incorporated into the perovskite structure, leading to ferroelectrics with desirable dielectric properties. These observed phase transitions closely match predictions made through first-principles calculations. The researchers also calculated the dielectric polarization of different phases of RbNbO3.

Materials Experience: Fundamentals of Materials and Design Editors: Elvin Karana, Owain Pedgley, and Valentina Rognoli

Researchers from the Shibaura Institute of Technology have pioneered a breakthrough in ferroelectric material development. They've engineered a novel displacement-type ferroelectric material boasting remarkable dielectric properties. Their achievement includes the successful synthesis of rubidium niobate (RbNbO3), a compound previously deemed challenging to produce under pressures exceeding 40,000 atmospheres. Additionally, they characterized how polarization changes across a wide temperature range during phase transitions. This breakthrough can lead to new design guidelines for ferroelectric materials.

The popular helical staircases typically cost between $50,000 and $150,000 depending on the design, material and finishes, said White, but they can cost over $1 million, according to Los Angeles real-estate agent Tomer Fridman of Compass. They usually require more customization than spiral staircases, which typically cost about $25,000 to $50,000, said White. Prefabricated, do-it-yourself spiral-staircase kits start at around $1,000 at most hardware stores. Because spiral staircases are designed to grab attention, like sculptures, it’s important that their lighting complements them at all times of day and from all perspectives, said Gale.

“Organic modern” spiral staircases have become increasingly popular since the pandemic, evoking a sense of wellness using natural materials and neutral color palettes, said Canadian architect Heather Dubbeldam. Katie McPherson, of the interior-design firm Meyer Davis in New York City, said she goes a step further to emphasize materials’ authenticity, having wooden steps and rails custom-carved to give them a hand-hewn quality. Because material costs vary, it’s difficult to specify bathroom remodeling costs by square footage alone.

Vitra "willing to take risks" over changing products' appearance to improve sustainability, says CEO Nora Fehlbaum

Bathroom windows offer improved air circulation and upgrade your bathroom’s look. Casement and awning windows work well in smaller spaces and provide excellent airflow. Other complementary types of windows include the classic double-hung or space-saving sliding options. You could also choose a custom window to add your personal touch to the room. In addition to the material, you’ll need to decide if a prefabricated (pre-fit) or custom bathroom vanity works best for your bathroom design. Pre-fit countertops are built to standard dimensions that work for most bathroom layouts.

A remodel involves changing the layout and replacing the tub or shower and requires additional installation costs. Wallpaper is a painting alternative that offers a great variety of pattern choices. To extend its longevity, you should control your bathroom’s humidity and heat and avoid installing wallpaper near water-heavy areas. While the price of bathroom wallpaper is relatively low, you’ll need to account for the professional installation cost. Homeowners should consider updating their bathroom walls with a new color or wallpaper.

A wheelchair-accessible bathroom or one that accommodates people with limited mobility can be extremely valuable to elderly homeowners or those taking in older relatives. These accommodations include adding a doorway at least 36 inches wide, a roll-in shower with no lip, a wall-mounted sink or toilet, and grab bars. Walk-in tubs are also popular and can come with several extra features such as water or jets, heated seats, or chromotherapy lights. Depending on the extent of the upgrade, you could add between $100 to $18,000 to your remodeling costs. Altering this area is often expensive, as the tub, shower, and surrounding area require special waterproofing.

However, your bathroom will almost certainly be out of commission for longer. Unless you have a pedestal or wall-mounted sink, you’ll also want a vanity that matches your cabinets in finish, edge, frame, and hardware. You can opt for a double vanity with two sinks, depending on the floor space and the number of people who use the bathroom. By using recycled instead of raw materials, we’re making use of resources that may otherwise end up in a landfill. After they’re collected, sorted, cleaned and processed, the materials are transformed into new, soft and durable stuffing for toys that can be played with for years to come.

materials and design

On average, adding new light fixtures will add between $200 to $1,000 to your overall cost. If you’re considering replacing a window, you should budget $300 to $700 for simplistic styles and upwards of $1,200 for more complex window options. If you plan to add a window, you’ll need a professional contractor to cut a new hole for the installation, which increases your costs by $3,000 to $6,000.

Yet the flexibility of the material creates new affordances that supersede those in the physical world, without breaking the rules of physics. Installing a walk-in shower can cost anywhere from $8,500 to well over $20,000, depending on the shower’s size and customization you want. Finally, we demonstrate an AI-generated gene editor, denoted as OpenCRISPR-1, exhibits compatibility with base editing. We release OpenCRISPR-1 publicly to facilitate broad, ethical usage across research and commercial applications. You may also need a permit from your state or city, depending on the remodel’s extensiveness.

Practical Magic: Revisiting the Romantic Victorian That Cast a Spell on Us

An example was that Gillian and Sally did not live with their aunts in the book compared to the movie. Standerfer insisted that the glass displayed in the kitchen cabinets be wavy, similar to how hand-blown glass would look a century or so ago. The props department even had the task of filling hundreds of bottles to put in the shelves of the potion room.

Brutalist Movement: Utilitarian Modernism in the History of Interior Design + Architecture

If you're able to change your lighting, choose designs that feel Gothic or Victorian in nature, focusing on stained glass, iron, or crystal pieces. The best way to do so is to bring as much attention to your ceilings with architectural details, including highlighting beams, using paint, or incorporating molding. Perhaps this means painting your ceiling a brighter color to offset darker or differently colored walls.

Coupeville is a magical town on Whidbey Island that’s sure to cast a spell on you from the moment you arrive. With its stunning waterfront views, historic homes, and charming streets, it’s no wonder that the town served as the filming location for the beloved movie Practical Magic. Right from its opening scene, "Practical Magic" reveals the Owens family's long history, dating back all the way to the Pilgrims. Throughout the movie, you see these pieces through family portraits covering the foyer, beautifully worn in copper pots and pans in the kitchen, vases, fabrics, and much more. It’s been 25 years since the crew of the 1998 film Practical Magic swept into the Pacific Northwest temporarily taking over San Juan Island and Whidbey Island. The production is said to have injected up to $3 million into the coastal communities and is credited for building one of the most memorable movie homes of all time.

Some great renovations that utilize Gothic details blend the old with the new to bring a historic edge to a 21st-century home (via Hooked on Houses). The Owens' house is no exception, showcasing beautiful woodwork in each room, particularly through crown molding and wood furniture, all of which give that vintage feel. An important room in any household, the Owens' kitchen displays great farmhouse rustic features and design methods. Farmhouse style, particularly in New England, showcases beautiful patina and distressed wood beams, as designer Cheryl Rosenberg tells The Spruce.

Standefer explained that the Aga functioned more or less like the Owens’ shrine, given that it's where they placed the cauldron and cooked up most of their spells. She settles down with a man called Michael (Mark Feuerstein), and they welcome two daughters. The production team wasn’t allowed to dig the grounds, and therefore, they set up the residence on giant platforms. The production team reportedly spent $80,000 to lease the burial ground where they set up the Owens residence.

The interiors of the home were built in Los Angeles and filled with treasures the couple found through architectural salvage, also a foreshadowing of their future projects. For many moviegoers, the most memorable part of the film was the Owens House, by all accounts a character in itself. The elaborate, richly decorated Shingle-style pile erected for the filming earned a write-up in Victoria magazine in October 1998. The house, with its remarkable kitchen, conservatory, interior staircases, widow's walk, gardens, and nooks, continues to be an inspiration for decorating websites and blogs.

The Interior Scenes Were Filmed in Los Angeles

Jimmy possesses Gillian again and tries killing Sally before Frances and Jet return. Realizing she must embrace magic to save her sister, Sally asks the aid of the townswomen and they form a coven to exorcise Jimmy's spirit. They break the Owens curse, exorcising Jimmy's spirit and allowing the coven to exile him permanently. In Tucson, Gary clears the sisters of any suspicion in Jimmy's case and returns to Massachusetts to be with Sally.

The experience brought an influx of cash from both the 150 studio personnel and the hiring of locals for everything from painting to traffic control to work as extras. Set designers purchased many local products, reportedly scouring antique stores all around Puget Sound. Then there were the intangibles of publicity and prestige that come along with being a part of a major motion picture. Locals were also called on to be extras and, in a few cases, singled out for roles that required speaking -- or chanting or screaming.

The actresses play Sally and Gillian Owens, two sisters, who happen to be witches, living in New England. It’s not too tricky to score an invite to the Magic Castle, Hollywood’s members-only magician clubhouse. Since 1963, the century-old Victorian mansion has served as the sort-of-secretive home base for the Academy of Magical Arts. Step inside—reservations and formal dress are required, and no photos, please—and you’ll find performance parlors, secret doors, mysterious illusions and—well, we don’t want to ruin all of the surprises in store. Instead of spending years practicing your craft as a wannabe magician, you can gain access to the Magic Castle via these ways below (ranked from easiest to most difficult).

"The interiors are simple, approaching utilitarian, because farm life isn't precious or luxurious," she says, all of which can be found in the Owens' kitchen. Filming for the town scenes in Practical Magic was done in downtown Coupeville in Washington. Apparently, the town’s residents allowed the buildings to be painted white for the film.

While movie fans won't find a market in this spot visiting Coupeville, the gallery offers an incredible selection of work by emerging and professional artists. There are also plenty of events to check out in the area, including regular festivals and farmers markets. During filming, the location was still the Sedge Building, which later became Little Red Hen Bakery. Several months ago, the bakery moved to another location in Coupeville, allowing Molka Xete Mexican Kitchen to take over the historical structure in late March. The series, named for the Sudbury, Massachusetts location of the novel and film, was not picked up.

The John Robertson Houser, which now houses the Seaside Spa, is visible in that scene. A White picket fence the production team constructed between the Little Red Hen Bakery and Toby’s Tavern still stands. In the DVD commentary, Bullock said that Kidman was the one who supplied the “very bad tequila” they drank while filming that scene. It wasn’t just great acting, but the actresses got sloshed, and perhaps that’s why the insults they were slinging around flowed.

The ‘Practical Magic’ House: The Secrets You Didn’t Know About the Iconic Film Set

If you would like to know more about the storyline, Wikipedia has a really comprehensive overview. This post is a detailed tour of the amazing Victorian house that is so prominently featured throughout the movie. While the movie was set in New England, the house was actually built on a burial ground on San Juan Island in Washington.

Just because the house isn’t real doesn’t mean you can’t relive the magic

There is no doubt the Owens would have acquired their own art prints over their family's history. You can decorate your house with similar prints to copy their witchy aesthetic. A gallery wall of prints would bring these lovely pieces to the room's forefront, or you can subtly weave them into your existing decor by adding them sparingly around the room (via One Kings Lane). Incorporating flowers or greenery in small glass vases or votives in a well-lit spot will make it feel like there's a conservatory in your home. Even adding furniture reminiscent of a greenhouse — maybe a metal bistro table and chairs — is a great way to bring this unique idea to the forefront. According to Salisbury Joinery, glass plays an important role in many Victorian-style homes, as the style's intricacies work well when given room to shine.

As the property was built on a burial ground (in a county park) the team working on the movie were not allowed to dig. So not to disturb the ground, the house was built on a giant platform. It sadly isn’t in the actual castle itself, but an overnight stay at this apartment-style hotel is the most straightforward way to gain entry to the magic club. Located right next door, the Magic Castle Hotel can book a reservation at the club for you, based on availability. Toby’s Tavern, known today as a local favorite for Penn Cove Mussels and a beer by the water, was transformed into The Catch and Fry. They used wood paneling for the staircase and foyer to give the home a Victorian feel.

Not in New England where the movie’s set, but on San Juan Island, in Washington. Add in a spooky parlor, an endlessly winding staircase, and an eerie attic room and it’s no wonder so many fans question whether this beguiling home actually exists. Lack of sleep and questionable dental habits aside, I still wish I could live inside the Owens family’s iconic Victorian home.

Use dark, rich browns and gray tones with lighter white or cream colors — you can even use a soft green if you're looking to keep some color on your walls. Use darker wood or black finishes with white or light touches, or vice versa. Any fan of the iconic, highly underrated flick "Practical Magic" is bound to be obsessed with a few things. The spark of magic, the spooky black cats, and undoubtedly the Owen's ancestral home, or what the viewer knows to be the aunt's house in the film.

Once the film was completed, the buildings were repainted to their original colors. One of the most memorable places inside the Practical Magic house is the kitchen. The kitchen in Practical Magic is often used as inspiration by many for their own kitchens. There’s a farmhouse sink, a very charming plate rack, storage for the numerous glassware and dishes to display, and the contrasting dark hardwood floors to the white cabinets. Regarding the wall decoration, Standerfer chose the wallpaper with designs of birds and tangled vines out of the love of nature that Owens’ aunts, Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, had.

Is the Practical Magic House Real? A Throwback to the Magical Movie House that Bewitched Us All!

In Alice Hoffman's novel Practical Magic and the film of the same name, the girls grow up in a magical house with two aunts who are practicing witches. Through tragedy, family drama, spells, and curses, the Owens sisters finally find balance. On April 6, 1998, Hollywood arrives in Washington as filming for the movie Practical Magic begins on Whidbey Island.

Bell jars were mostly used to protect delicate plants from frost damage, insects, or even other animals. Dunne hired Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch of the Roman and Williams firm to design the house that looked like it could be an ancestral home for witches. The house was so iconic inside and out that it got many people curious, including celebrities.

The seasonal affair is held each fall in the waterfront village of Coupeville, Washington, where Warner Bros. filmed the cult classic in the late '90s. Fans flock to Whidbey Island to re-create their favorite scenes and experience the filming locations for themselves each year, but this fall calls for something extraordinary. This work on the gardens would later inspire their work on their own home in Montauk.

The movie’s centerpiece is undoubtedly the Owens’ Victorian residence. One famous Hollywood starlet, who wasn’t attached to the film, was so enamored by the beautiful abode that she wanted to buy the mansion. There’s plenty more to explore about the Practical Magic filming locations, so let’s get right into it. Aside from the exterior color, most of these buildings still look the way they did in the '90s. Sally and Gillian are sisters torn between their witchy heritage and their desire to live normal lives.

The movie, Practical Magic is based on the book of the same name by author Alice Hoffman. In fact, this film is so beloved that special events and screenings of the film continue to draw crowds even now. Front Street had a refresh with practically every storefront getting painted white. Meanwhile, many small businesses in the area were transformed inside and out to accommodate the script.

So, fans, before you start your trip, make sure to add these iconic filming locations to your itinerary. The location of the Owens home — though never explicitly revealed where — is set on the cliffs of an island. The tall spire of the house looks to be inspired by a lighthouse, plus its proximity to water makes fans wonder if the home was a lighthouse at one time.

According to the October 1998 issue of Victoria Magazine that featured the house, Standerfer analyzed Hoffman’s descriptions of the house. One probably wonders by now where the interior scenes of the Practical Magic house were done. All the interior scenes were filmed at a studio in Los Angeles and modeled after a house on San Juan Valley Road in Washington State. While Practical Magic takes place in New England, the place where the Owens house was built was actually on San Juan Island. It would’ve cost a lot to build a house from scratch that included all the utilities that came with a real house as well.

Norwegian Alaska Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Norwegian Cruises to Alaska

This tramway takes you to the peak of Hoonah Mountain, offering sweeping views of Port Frederick, Spasski River, and the lush Alaskan wilderness. As we paddled through the serene waters, we were greeted by local residents—sea lions and bald eagles. It was a surreal experience, paddling while these majestic creatures went about their day.

Spinnaker Lounge

We started off the night with the Lone Star chili and deviled eggs. Then, I opted for the smoked turkey breast, and Don went all in on the Pitmaster. The turkey breast was better than I remember, and the Pitmaster featured it all–brisket, spare rib, chicken, and sausage. What did throw off our timing a bit was the sequence this Captain took compared to our previous visits.

We’ll tell you which ports are must-visits and what experiences you shouldn’t miss, ensuring you make the most of your time in Alaska. Sitka is the first and oldest city in Alaska so it’s fitting that it was the very first port of the 2024 cruise ship season. I last visited here in late October on the very last cruise of the 2023 season.

I hope I don’t exceed my onboard spending budget of zero dollars. After dinner I attended Jersey Boys which is one of the things that keep me coming back to the NCL mega ships despite the 400 flights of stairs I have to climb each day. The full-length broadway style shows, including this one, are phenomenal and seeing them for free (well, sort of)…at sea…feels like the ultimate life hack. Honestly, one night in a hotel room in New York plus dinner and show tickets would likely cost more than my entire cruise fare.

The area is also home to five species of salmon and is therefore a fishing paradise. Or journey inland to explore hiking trails for all fitness levels and discover pristine landscapes. Downtown boasts a thriving arts community, delicious cafes and restaurants serving up the freshest seafood, boutique shops and museums.

This destination offers superb fishing, and plentiful historical attractions. The big, blue Pacific and stunning Koolau mountains serve as a dramatic setting for Hawaii's largest city. Catch a glimpse of history by visiting Pearl Harbor and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. One of the standout features was the freestyle disembarkation, allowing us to exit the ship at our leisure. But what truly simplified our transition was Seattle’s Port Valet Service.

Embarkation Day Lunch

Following the comedy show, we headed over to Q for Nashville Nights and Lights. This pretty much consisted of a country line dance class followed by live music and dancing. It’s too bad there wasn’t a country band featured in this venue as there was in pre-COVID times. Rushing out of dinner rather abruptly, we made it to the Social comedy club just in time for the 9 PM show. Besides Choir of Man, this is the other show that requires reservations.

The hotel staff will call you if the skies clear, providing a view of the majestic mountain from the hotel's back deck. Simply because it's nice to have time to relax in your stateroom for a good run after traveling to different hotels every night. Just like that our Norwegian Encore Alaska cruise review had come to an end. Stuffed from dinner, we made our way up to the Observation Lounge to catch some of Archie’s set, this was the only musical act on the ship that we hadn’t seen yet.

The experience was magical, but what’s even more astonishing is that you can also spot these majestic creatures from the shores of Shaman Point Beach. In summary, Sitka is a treasure trove of experiences, from its historical landmarks to culinary delights and shopping options. Despite the extra time needed for tendering, the day was rich in Alaskan culture and natural beauty. For more tips on what to pack, check out our detailed Alaska cruise packing list and tips.

Cruisers can purchase week-long passes, or day passes on port days pending availability, to this thermal suite. However, there are only a total of 200 passes provided, so be sure to book early. This thermal suite on Norwegian Encore is quite large and features several padded and heated stone loungers.

To reach the fjords, you will pass through Revillagigedo Channel and proceed into the Behm Canal, a waterway where orcas, seals and porpoises are often spotted. Occasional stops will be made along the way to view an active bald eagle’s nest, and New Eddystone Rock, an immense volcanic spire that rises above the sea. While cruising through Rudyerd Bay, the naturalist will describe the natural history and point out seabirds that may be nesting in the soaring granite cliffs. You will also have the opportunity to delve into the Tlingit culture by listening to a tribal storyteller-artist or by watching a video presentation. Haines is your gateway to the spectacular wilds of Southeast Alaska and the Inside Passage. Take to the water — by kayak or boat — and look for seals, orcas, bald eagles, bears and other wildlife.

Celestyal Discovery

Adding to the refreshed look and feel, new livery was revealed in the form of an updated Celestyal logo, signature Celestyal stars and a blue wave running along the hull. From the newly replaced carpets throughout to the freshly repainted beach-hut-esque cabin doors, the ship felt more than ready to welcome its first guests. You might not feel like you're boarding a brand-new ship when you first step onto Celestyal Discovery, but both inside and out the vast majority of the vessel feels smart, polished and freshly rejuvenated.

Of all cabins, 9 are Suite-grade accommodations, each with a private step-out balcony. For-fee Grill Seekers is a fine-dining surf and turf restaurant with personalised service and an excellent menu of steaks and seafood. The Mediterranean antipasto platter, which arrived tableside on a trolley, was particularly impressive but everything was excellent – including the service. A poolside Greek Deli also serves hearty locally inspired food for lunch, while Fig & Honey offers a healthier mix of smoothies and light bites, both for a fee. Sozo offers all the usual massage treatments, there's a trio of hammam/steam rooms, and a big light-filled relaxation zone overlooking a generously sized outdoor hot tub. Two levels up on deck 11, the ship's fitness room has had a complete overhaul, with shiny new cardio machines and free weights, and it sits right next to the similarly up-styled Sozo Beauty and Wellness Centre.

Bella Fortuna

Savour the flavours and honour the people who keep Greece the wholesome place it is to this day. The dynamic beach resort of Kusadasi welcomes you with its warm and friendly ambience. From here you will be whisked away for a guided tour round ancient Ephesus, one of the highlights of this iconic Aegean cruise.

Walking tour in the Medieval City of Rhodes

90 min later we were walking down the quay to the ship, the even older Olympia tied up nearby and forgotten. Finding our way to our staterooms, we started unpacking only to be shooed out by the stewards telling us no one can enter their cabins until after lunch. So we went above to the buffets with our hand luggage, only to find out they weren't opening until 1pm.

Mediterranean

For relaxation, the swimming pool area on Deck 9 offers sun loungers, a massage cabana, and access to the nearby Helios Bar to help keep you refreshed. The ship’s spa is found on Deck 8 and provides a menu of reinvigorating treatments and services – perfect for a lazy day at sea. The ship’s lounges – Eclipse (Deck 7), Selene, Argo, and Muses (all Deck 5) – offer a great way to spend a quiet afternoon with a good book or catching up with new friends.

Several cabins accommodate up to four passengers, although there are no adjoining rooms. There are many ways to occupy yourself on a Celestyal Olympia cruise. The entertainment programme is excellent and features everything from dancing lessons to Greek language classes.

The accommodation offers everything you need for your stay, including a television, ensuite facilities and air conditioning. The Muses Lounge is the theater/main show lounge with tiered seating and a dance floor. The grand-style entertainment program offers live music and dance shows, as well as a magician and acrobatic performances.

It had been a long time since breakfast in Athens and I had never encountered this in any other lines. So we waited, along with all the other passengers in a lounge, which fortunately was open- just beverages though. Celestyal Olympia is not competing with mainstream cruise lines for passengers -- it solely focuses on destination-intensive short trips -- and the experience onboard is vastly different to bigger ships. So keep your expectations in check -- what it might lack in specialty restaurants, variety of entertainment or onboard activities -- it more than makes up in giving you an authentic insight into the Greek islands. Single beds can be pushed together upon request, please contact us for more information.

She has since sailed for Louis Cruises as MS Louis Olympia, and as MS Celestyal Olympia since 2014.

The monumental grid of medieval walls provides a picturesque setting as we pull into the port of Skala on the idyllic Greek island of Patmos. Locally known as the ‘island of the Apocalypse’, Patmos boasts a spiritual vibe thanks to the legends of St. John. Take time to explore the lush, forest-like hills that encircle the capital, Chora or join our local guide for an exciting adventure. The mood was upbeat in the queue to check in for the maiden voyage of Celestyal's latest ship — Celestyal Discovery.

The vessel's resident DJ pumped out tunes while an impromptu dance routine by staff was greeted by whoops from the waiting line; a party of all-girl passengers followed suit. While the line's latest ship hadn't received an official launch party, this felt appropriately celebratory for the reveal of this newly revamped vessel. In addition to our wide selection of all-inclusive menu, guests also have the opportunity to upgrade your dining experience and sample our chef’s exclusive dishes for an additional fee. Coffee and afternoon tea is also served every day and an array of refreshing soft drinks are readily available.

Be amazed as the skilled chefs create masterpieces that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. Sit back, relax, and let your taste buds embark on a voyage of pure gastronomic pleasure. A neon-lit passage that links to the ship's after-hours area – the AFTer Bar & Lounge – certainly injects some theatre into your arrival. The bar is the ship's main nightlife zone, with plenty of low-lit comfy seating, nightly DJ sessions and a bar-side dancefloor. As the name references, the ship's main late-night zone is positioned at the ship's rear and away from cabins.
